So what is Botox, really?
Botulinum toxin (Botox is the brand name) is a neuromodulator — a purified protein that temporarily blocks nerve signals to specific muscles. The treated muscle relaxes, the overlying skin smooths, and the lines caused by repetitive expression soften.
It's been used clinically for over 30 years, originally for medical conditions like blepharospasm and cervical dystonia. The cosmetic application came later — and has become one of the most studied treatments in aesthetic medicine.
